Phil801s Daughter Has Cancer And What Else Is Wrong With Healthcare

Phil801s Daughter Has Cancer And What Else Is Wrong With Healthcare I met Phil801 a couple of years ago, and weve bumped into one another a number of times over the two years. Hes a short, stocky wrestler-type. I met him when he was employed, but just a few months later he had started his own company, and has since worked for himself. Hes a software guy, and a visionary. He loves the mountains, has a large family, and used to have goats and chickens (not sure if he still does). Phil801 is a blogger, in fact, one of the bloggers who got me started blogging. Of course Phil801 is on Twitter. And that is how I found out his daughter has cancer. My heart goes out to Phil801 and his family. Not to sound sappy, but I cried yesterday as I read through his recent blog posts, where he is sharing the experience, and pictures. As a father, I cant imagine the pain he is going through. Here is a picture of Phil and Serenity, in the hospital bed: From her dads blog post this morning: Serenity Go, Fight, WIN!!! While Phil801 says he hasnt really thought about the money part of this ordeal, it is something that has terrified me for over two years. Phil801s experience reminds me of the time I cut my hand open two years ago. I had been unemployed for a while, had no health insurance, and was long-past the time when the money ran out (or at least it felt that way). I was also in the low part of my job search where there was significant despair I *should have* landed my job by then, but no one was even looking at my resume!! One evening, as I was trying to separate two frozen hamburger patties with a very sharp knife (dumb, I know), it happened. I found myself leaning over the sink, washing my wound, wondering how I would explain how dumb I was. I was nauseaous, and wondered if it was because of the blood and gore (okay, it wasnt that bad, but I was getting lite-headed), or because of the money. As an unemployed chump, with no money in sight, and no insurance, it made me sick to think about how much this was going to cost. Thats why I chose to use super glue instead of going to the doctor. I finally dragged myself to our doctor a few days later when I was sure it was infected (it wasnt). He said to keep up the super glue treatment. And he didnt charge me for the visit. Otherwise that would have been a $80 visit. Stitches would have probably been a few hundred dollars. But what if something worse happened? When my then-three-year-old fell off the bed and broke her arm, it was an excruciating $500+ bill. What if there were something else? A skateboard accident for my son? Cancer, or some other very expensive health condition for any of us? Accidents and illnesses have been a major concern since I got laid off, since we didnt have that insurance safety net. Luckily the government was kind enough to have come up with COBRA, but seriously, that is an absolute joke. How would I pay $700+ each month for sucky insurance coverage? I have heard others say they have paid over $1,000 per month for crappy COBRA coverage. What do you do, declare medical bankruptcy? What is an unemployed family supposed to do to get healthcare so they dont become a burden on society? Heck, what is an employed family supposed to do? It is scary. Im not a pessimist but this is a huge issue that I dont see a good resolution for anytime soon. And for that, Ill continue to live in fear. Push Back to Negotiate - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Push Back to Negotiate - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Tired of pushy telemarketers? Sales training changed my shyness into boldness minus the pushiness of it all. So when the pushy telemarketers make the mistake of calling me, I’m aware of the sales game and know how to negotiate a fair conclusion. By sharing the following tips, perhaps together we can change the way this industry operates! The Script Reader You must have received calls where the person never offers an opportunity to respond. They are reading a script word for word. Interruption grabs their attention and stops this nonsense. Politely say, “Excuse me, but why do you believe I would be interested?” Only a personal dialogue will get to the true interest of the potential client while scripts rarely work. By interrupting the caller, you either get someone who will hang up the phone due to their not knowing how to respond, or, you might actually enter into a meaningful conversation. On occasion, you might actually need the service being sold. By softening the conversation and taking the lead, it’s quite possible to earn a better price than would otherwise have been offered. Referred Tele-Marketing The first person reaching you sounds intelligent and you might have a need, so you agree to have their salesperson follow-up with a call. But the salesperson follows up by delivering this nerve-wracking news, “You need to make a decision by 5:00 p.m. today because that is the latest I can lock this amazing offer in just for you.” Make it a habit to get the name, company name and telephone number of the first person from now on for the “just in case” scenario. In this scenario, call that first person back to complain about the aggressiveness of the salesperson. Two steps are thus achieved. While receiving an apology, you also raise your status to that of equal status with all concerned. Second, they are in a required position to make right on what went wrong. Should you be the least bit interested, you will be provided a better price than the initial offer; at the very least, you are positioned to ask for a better price. Aggressive Behavior Take the “Sales Expert” stance by providing insight as to how sales should actually be conducted. Ask that aggressive salesperson: Did you know people buy from people they know, like and trust? Ask how they know you and what is their plan for building trust? Another tactic is to use sales related vocabulary. Salespeople traditionally apply the word “prospect” to those to whom they are trying to sell. A good response is to use that vocabulary by saying, I’m sorry but I’m not a good prospect for what you are selling. You will do better to find someone else who is. There is no way the salesperson can argue with that response because it’s the truth, and they will release you from the phone. Just as we need to find our own well-qualified prospects, perhaps if we train telemarketers properly, we will receive better-qualified calls ourselves. Wouldn’t that be nice?! My goal is to help others get on the wave of the Smooth Sale! Author: Elinor Stutz, CEO of Smooth Sale, (800) 704-1499; was designated as a “Top 25 Sales Influencer for 2012.” Elinor authored the International Best-Selling book, “Nice Girls DO Get the Sale: Relationship Building That Gets Results”, Sourcebooks and best selling, “HIRED! How to Close the Gender Gap in Your Hiring Practices CareerMetis.com

How to Close the Gender Gap in Your Hiring Practices â€" CareerMetis.com Source: Pexels.comWant to close the gender gap in your hiring practices? The gender gap is a serious problem in workplaces across the world, and it affects more than just women. Gender gaps in hiring â€" and gender gaps in pay and retention â€" lead to the loss of billions of dollars every year. It’s Not Just a Woman’s ProblemevalIt’s no secret that women get less pay for the same work. In jobs such as financial management, marketing, or law, women receive around 71% of men’s salaries. In tech jobs, the number of women hired is small in the first place. The number who leave is too high. This gender gap affects everybody. Both women and men head up many American households. If women across the board were given equal pay for their work, it would amount to a massive raise for millions of people. This raise could pay off a great deal of debt. It could increase consumer spending and saving. Most of all, a raise for women could improve life for almost all working Americans and their families. It Starts With Hiring PracticesevalWhat are the most effective hiring practices to eliminate the gender gap? Can hiring practices be changed by a tactic as simple as removing a candidate’s name from a resume or hiring “blind”?Hiring “blind” may seem to have some initial appeal. In a music audition, a judge can listen to a musician behind a curtain. The judge can evaluate the performer based only on the quality of the playing they hear. Furthermore, blind auditions can also reveal severe bias. Software developers on Github accept women’s code 72% of the time when they don’t know who wrote it. When the developers know women wrote the code, their acceptance rate falls to 62%.Still, what if an applicant can’t demonstrate their job skills by writing anonymous code or performing Chopin behind a curtain? Perhaps using another method such as a voice enhancer to disguise gender might work? The short answer is, “Not really.” Hiring practices are complex. Complicate d problems usually don’t respond well to simplistic solutions such as removing names from a resume. These solutions do help women get their feet in the door for a preliminary interview. However, as soon as women get an interview with a manager, the advantage disappears. Methods That Work: Clear Selection CriteriaPart of the problem women face is in dealing with a hiring manager’s “gut feeling” about a candidate. Bottom line, a “gut feeling” often means “unconscious bias.” More importantly, a gut feeling is not the same thing as an actual job qualification.Clear criteria can clarify the actual skills a candidate needs for job success. Not surprisingly, the best standards are based on valid data. For instance, consider the issue of hiring a teacher for an AP Chemistry position. If teachers with chemistry degrees get the best results, then hire the chemistry majors. Gender has nothing to do with it.Objective selection tests can also help pinpoint personality traits that suggest a candidate would be a good fit for a position. An objective analysis, unlike a person, can identify these traits without gender bias. For instance, a CEO position may require a candidate to be self-confident. However, women who are self-confident are often read as pushy or bossy. Men, on the other hand, are praised for having leadership skills.evalStudies show one crucial factor about screening tests, though. Managers need to commit to these results before interviewing the candidates themselves. Pre-screening helps level the gender-biased playing field. However, gender bias in hiring may be affected by a relatively easy choice: Put more women in the hiring pool. More women in the hiring pool signals less-stereotypic perception that women are appropriate candidates for the job in the first place.A Better Choice: Have Women Do the HiringNot surprisingly, when women evaluate candidates for a position, more women get hired. The reasons, however, are more complex than merely “W omen hire women.”These reasons explain why blind hiring doesn’t work. When women feel as if they have to disguise their names, try not to look too feminine, use avatars instead of their faces, or leave their names off their resumes, the message is clear. Women are not welcome.evalMore to the point, blind applications signal that the company’s management is fundamentally hostile to women. If the administration can’t be trusted to put aside their biases long enough to look at a woman’s qualifications, then why would a woman want to work there?evalWhen There Are Nine: Women in PowerWhen Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg was asked when there would be enough women on the Supreme Court, she answered, “When there are nine.” To those surprised by this statement, Ginsberg added that the Court has typically been made up of male judges and no one ever raised a question about that. One piece of advice to female candidates for a position is to raise a question about that. It’s a wise mo ve for women to ask about a company’s diversity. It’s an even more sensible move for the company to have a strong answer. Hearing vapid responses such as, “We value diversity here” signals a lack of genuine commitment. A better response would be, “Women make up 50% of our executive team.”The Root of the Problem: Changing Company CultureA 50% female executive team doesn’t happen overnight. It requires a significant shift in company culture, and company culture needs to change at some levels. Pay is crucial, but so is reputation. One good way to minimize gender gaps in hiring is to equalize pay. Pay equality and pay transparency are crucial. Stopping the practice of basing an employee’s salary on their previous paycheck helps break the cycle of pay inequality from job to job. Making pay transparent also helps companies stop paying men more than women for doing the same job.Being considerate about families also helps. Flexible hours and family leave for all parents will keep more women on the job. More to the point, it will attract more highly-qualified women to the job in the first place.Reputation matters. Think about the recent blow to its public image Google recently suffered. Multiple employees allege that Google fostered a harassment-friendly “bro culture” that penalizes women. Is it any wonder many women choose to work elsewhere or work in other industries that value them as equal employees?Ultimately, changing the gender gap in hiring practices can’t happen with an easy band-aid solution. It’s a complex problem. However, a company that truly values diversity is a fantastic place to work not just for women but for everyone.

Pass the QTS Literacy Skills Test Sample Spelling Questions

Pass the QTS Literacy Skills Test Sample Spelling Questions Bought our QTS Literacy Skills or Professional Skills Tests for Initial Teacher Training (ITT) workbook? Download the QTS Spelling test audio files by entering your email and name below: Introduction â€" What is QTS? QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) is an award given to those who meet a series of requirements, which includes passing two tests: the QTS Literacy Skills Test and the QTS Numeracy skills Test. These tests assess a candidate’s grasp of essential literacy and numeracy skills, making sure that they are up to the task of becoming a teacher. In this post, we will provide you with an explanation of the spelling section of the QTS Literacy Skills Test, as well as some sample spelling questions to practice with. Do note that these tests do not assess your teaching skills in any way â€" they simply make sure that your literacy and numeracy skills are of a certain standard that is required in order to teach effectively. The QTS Literacy Skills Test â€" Spelling Section The QTS lite racy skills test is one of the two tests that all aspiring teachers must pass before they can achieve the career of their dreams. The pass mark is 60% and the test is comprised of four sections: spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension. Each of these sections are worth a similar amount of marks, and so it is best to devote equal attention to them. However, we’re going to focus on the spelling section of the test, and the type of questions that you might face. In the first section of the QTS Literacy Skills Test, you will need to answer ten spelling questions. There are ten marks available for this section, so each question is worth one mark. This means that the spelling section is worth between 20% and 25% of the overall test, depending on the test you sit (sometimes the total mark is higher than 45). Therefore, it is certainly worth taking some time to brush up on your spelling and make sure that you can answer any question that you’re faced with. The words which you wi ll be required to spell in the test are words typically found within the world of teaching. You won’t be expected to spell words like ‘diverticulitis’ or ‘brachiosaurus’ â€" just words which you may find as a teacher when reading someone else’s work (either a colleague or a student), as well as school and government documents which may be important to your role as a teacher.Question Format for Spelling Questions Questions in the spelling section can be taken in two forms: audio and non-audio. The audio version of the test contains questions which appear as follows: There were lots of small changes which would prove to be a ________. In the audio version of the test, candidates will read the sentence and then click an audio icon in the space where the word has been deleted. Through their headphones, they will be able to listen to the missing word. After that, it’s the candidate’s task to type in the word how they believe it to be spelled. The icon can be clicked as ma ny times as necessary in order to repeat the audio. The non-audio version of the spelling section is reserved for candidates with a hearing impairment. Questions in this form of the test appear as follows: There were lots of small changes which would prove to be a ________.NewsanceNusenceNuisanceNewsans In this version of the test, candidates must choose the correct answer from the multiple choice list. We will be using the non-audio version of the test for the practice questions. Finally, bear in mind that the first section you complete in the test has to be spelling. After you have completed the spelling section and move onto punctuation, grammar and comprehension, you are unable to return to it. This is presumably to prevent candidates from finding the missing words from the spelling section correctly spelled in other parts of the test!Sample Spelling Questions Use the following spelling questions to practice some of the more difficult spellings you may come across in the test. However, it still pays to practice your spelling. In particular, you should use the sample spelling questions to find out what your weaknesses are. Do you struggle to correctly apply prefixes and suffixes? Do you, like many others, find words with double consonants difficult to spell? This will become evident as you do more practice questions. Once you find which words you struggle with, keep a list of difficult words and take some time each day to practice them. Once you feel confident that you have mastered a word, cross it off your list and move onto another. You will become exposed to a broader range of words by reading fiction and non-fiction, so try to make room for general reading in your study or leisure time. Most importantly, remember that the spelling section only makes up a part of the QTS Literacy Skills test. If you want to firmly pass the test, you will also need to practice your grammar, punctuation and comprehension skills. Remain focused, persevere and you will eventually achieve your goals.
